Mid-Century Scandanavian Kitchen in Glen Ellyn

1st Place Award for Large Kitchen in the NKBA 2016 Design Vision Awards

Location: Glen Ellyn, IL

Design Challenge: This 1950’s ranch turned cape cod was a bit of a mutt with a dingy 3-season room off the back of the house which the homeowners, Susan and Jeff Klimala (owners of The Kitchen Studio) desired to open into the kitchen. One of the challenges with mid-century homes is the 8’ ceilings and they wanted to have at least one room that had a higher ceiling.

Solution: The 3-season room was insulated, given a vaulted ceiling with skylights and now opens up to the kitchen. This large open concept kitchen and dining space in was created by removing a load bearing wall between the old kitchen and a porch area. This room now houses a raw edge white oak dining table and functions as an informal dining room. A large calcutta marble topped island takes center stage. Honeycomb tile and open shelving along the cooktop wall add an interesting focal point. Antique mirrored glass faces the storage unit housing dry goods. Details were added that had a bit of a mid-century vibe and worked well with what was originally a 1950s ranch.
